This category groups synthetic peptides that appear in the preclinical literature under the heading of cytoprotection: the study of how cells and tissue models respond to stress, injury and recovery conditions in controlled settings. The two most frequently studied members are BPC-157, a pentadecapeptide sequence derived from a fragment of a gastric protein, and TB-500, a synthetic fragment corresponding to the actin-binding region of thymosin beta-4.
Chemically these are unrelated. BPC-157 is a short linear 15-residue sequence noted in the literature for stability in aqueous conditions, while TB-500 corresponds to a seven-residue actin-binding motif of a much larger parent protein. What places them in the same category is the experimental context in which they are examined rather than any shared structural class.
Reported in vitro applications include fibroblast and endothelial cell culture work, scratch and migration assays, angiogenesis models, actin polymerisation studies in the case of thymosin fragments, and comparative stability testing across reconstitution conditions. The published record for both compounds is predominantly preclinical, and findings in cell culture or animal models do not establish any effect in humans.
